The Inland Northwest and Mountain West regions now have direct access to the Hawaiian Islands. Alaska Airlines has announced a strategic expansion of its seasonal network, introducing nonstop service from Boise, Idaho, and Spokane, Washington, to Honolulu.

This initiative removes the need for passengers to navigate congested West Coast hubs, such as Seattle-Tacoma or Portland International, significantly reducing total transit time for winter travelers.

Strategic Shift Following Hawaiian Airlines Merger

The expansion follows the integration of Hawaiian Airlines into the Alaska Air Group. By analyzing passenger data and consumer behavior, the combined carrier identified a significant gap in the market for direct leisure routes from the interior Northwest to Oahu.

According to U.S. Department of Transportation data, Honolulu had consistently been one of the largest unserved markets for both Boise and Spokane. Previously, more than 40,000 passengers annually were forced to take indirect flights between these city pairs.

To facilitate these routes, Alaska Airlines is utilizing its fuel-efficient Boeing 737 fleet, allowing the carrier to capture high-demand domestic leisure traffic while optimizing aircraft utilization.

Detailed Flight Schedules and Operations

The new services are specifically timed to accommodate vacationers, ensuring arrivals align with hotel check-in windows and afternoon activities.

Boise (BOI) to Honolulu (HNL) Starting December 17, 2026, this route will operate daily using a Boeing 737 MAX.

  • Departure: 10:20 a.m. from Boise Airport.
  • Arrival: 2:20 p.m. local time in Honolulu (7-hour flight duration).
  • Return: Departs Honolulu at 12:42 p.m., landing in Boise at 9:45 p.m.

Spokane (GEG) to Honolulu (HNL) Starting December 19, 2026, this route will operate as a weekly Saturday service.

  • Departure: 9:00 a.m. from Spokane International Airport.
  • Arrival: 2:03 p.m. in Honolulu.
  • Return: Departs Honolulu at 2:33 p.m., landing in Spokane at 10:42 p.m.

Network Rebalancing and International Trade-offs

The push into domestic leisure markets has required a reallocation of resources. To support these new routes and increase frequency on other high-traffic paths—such as Las Vegas to Honolulu, which will see four daily flights during peak holidays and spring break—the airline has reduced some international capacity.

Specifically, Hawaiian Airlines has discontinued its seasonal service between Honolulu and Auckland, New Zealand. Kirsten Amrine, Vice President of Network Planning and Revenue Management for Alaska Airlines, attributed this shift to high fuel costs, unfavorable currency exchange rates, and a slower-than-expected recovery in outbound Pacific travel.

Amrine noted that demand from the Boise and Spokane markets remains robust, with many passengers using Honolulu as a gateway to reach Maui, Kauai, and the Island of Hawaii.

Winter Flight Availability and Booking Guide

Travelers can book these routes through the digital portals of both Alaska Airlines and Hawaiian Airlines.

Route Frequency Start Date End Date Aircraft

Spokane $\rightarrow$ Honolulu Weekly (Sat) Dec 19, 2026 April 17, 2027 Boeing 737

Passengers are encouraged to monitor introductory fares often available for new route launches and to utilize the combined loyalty program to redeem points for upgrades across the integrated network.

The shift toward domestic "sun-seeker" routes marks a pivot in strategy for the Alaska Air Group as it prioritizes high-yield leisure demand over volatile international corridors.
