The Philippine Department of Tourism (DOT) has officially welcomed the arrival of Air China’s inaugural flight from Chongqing to Manila. This new direct service marks a critical strategic milestone in the Philippines' ongoing efforts to restore Chinese tourist arrivals to pre-pandemic levels and beyond.

A New Gateway for Chinese Travelers

The launch of the Chongqing–Manila route is part of a broader bilateral push to enhance connectivity between the two nations. Chongqing, one of China's four direct-administered municipalities and a massive inland economic engine, represents a huge untapped market for Philippine tourism.

Route Details:

  • Departure: Chongqing Jiangbei International Airport (CKG)
  • Destination: Ninoy Aquino International Airport (MNL), Manila
  • Operating Carrier: Air China
  • Significance: This is the first direct connection between these two specific hubs, eliminating the need for time-consuming transfers in Guangzhou or Hong Kong.

Strategic Importance for Philippine Tourism

Before 2020, China was the Philippines' second-largest source of international tourists. The DOT is aggressively working to regain this market share through several key initiatives:

1. Diversifying the Market

By securing direct flights from inland Chinese cities like Chongqing (rather than just coastal hubs like Shanghai or Beijing), the DOT is diversifying its reach and making Philippine beaches and cultural sites more accessible to millions of new potential visitors.

2. Boosting the MICE Sector

Chongqing is a major industrial and business hub. The new direct link is expected to drive growth in the MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conventions, and Exhibitions) sector, bringing in high-value business delegations and incentive groups to the luxury hotels of Manila and Clark.

3. Strengthening Cultural Ties

The DOT highlighted that increased aviation connectivity serves as a bridge for cultural exchange, fostering better understanding and stronger economic ties between the people of Chongqing and the Philippines.

Welcoming the Inaugural Flight

The inaugural Air China flight was welcomed at Manila's Ninoy Aquino International Airport with a traditional water cannon salute and a reception attended by high-ranking officials from both the DOT and Air China.

DOT Secretary [Name] expressed optimism about the new route, stating: "This inaugural flight from Chongqing is more than just a new schedule on the board; it is a symbol of our commitment to revitalizing our international tourism sector and welcoming back our friends from China with open arms."
