Rivas, San Juan del Sur, and Nicaragua’s Pacific Coast are becoming increasingly easier to connect within a single journey because of the changes introduced by the Carretera Costanera in terms of road travel on Nicaragua’s Pacific Coast. The construction of the road has transformed the practical geography of several destinations located on the coast. With the completion of the third stage of 30 kilometres, the total Costanera route now covers 89 kilometres. Furthermore, in July this year, Nicaragua declared that the completion of the first phase of 119 kilometres from El Naranjo to Masachapa has been completed. This makes travel through the area that was formerly accessed using more difficult routes possible in the region. This means that visitors have an opportunity to visit places and beaches that were previously difficult to access by road.

The Costanera Changes the Pacific Road Trip

The attraction of this road is not simply the pavement itself. It changes how a traveller can build a holiday.

A journey around San Juan del Sur can now be combined more naturally with Tola, El Astillero, Popoyo and other Pacific coastal communities. Surfing remains a major draw around this part of Nicaragua, while beach stays, small coastal businesses, restaurants and nature-focused activities give visitors reasons to spend more time rather than simply passing through.

The government’s June announcement said the 119-kilometre section provides access to 62 Pacific beaches and is intended to strengthen tourism alongside commerce, fishing and local economic activity. The route from El Naranjo to Masachapa places several established and emerging beach destinations within a more connected road corridor.

For self-drive travellers, that means greater flexibility. Instead of building an itinerary around a single beach town, visitors can move between coastal areas and spend several nights in different communities. The road also creates a more practical connection between inland travel and the Pacific shore.

Tourism Growth Is Already Showing in the Numbers

Nicaragua’s tourism statistics show that international travel activity is strengthening during 2026.

INTUR reported that the country recorded 499,899 visitor arrivals during the first four months of 2026, compared with 463,131 during the same period in 2025. Of those arrivals, 284,610 were from other countries, while 131,935 identified tourism as their reason for visiting.

More recent first-quarter data reported by INTUR showed $159 million in tourism receipts, up 40.1 percent from the same period in 2025. Average daily spending by non-resident visitors reached $49.10, while the average stay was 10.1 days.

The figures point to a visitor market spending more time inside the country, giving destinations outside the capital and traditional stopovers a larger opportunity to capture overnight stays.

The data also shows differences by source region. European visitors averaged 14.7 days in Nicaragua during the first quarter, while North American visitors averaged 12.7 days. South American visitors recorded the highest daily spending, at $148.20.

León and Granada Still Anchor Cultural Travel

The growth of Pacific coastal access does not remove Nicaragua’s established cultural destinations from the itinerary.

León and Granada remain important stops for travellers interested in colonial architecture, historic streets, churches, food and cultural experiences. They also work naturally as gateways between inland cultural travel and the Pacific coast.

A longer stay can therefore combine several very different landscapes. Travellers can spend time among León’s historic buildings, explore Granada and Lake Nicaragua, continue toward the Pacific beaches and then travel south through the Costanera corridor toward San Juan del Sur and Rivas.

That broader routing is particularly relevant as Nicaragua develops its tourism offer beyond a single-city or overland stop.

Remote Nature Adds Another Layer

Nicaragua’s allure is not restricted to the more popular Pacific circuit either. Travellers seeking a change of scenery that includes wildlife watching, hiking, water activities and more natural sights will find Ometepe Island, Caribbean locales and natural reserves very attractive options indeed. Destinations like Bluefields and Corn Island along the Caribbean coast will require a different kind of travel itinerary compared to the Pacific coast, but for travellers who are in the country for a little while, it does provide them with yet another geographical angle to explore. As far as visitors to Nicaragua during the latter half of 2026 are concerned, the difference is now becoming clearer along the Pacific coast thanks to the improved network of roads that connects all the various attractions along the Pacific coast together in the form of a route.
