Airport Authority Hong Kong (AAHK) has integrated Generative AI and expanded Terminal 2 capacity to meet surging demand, while securing a Platinum award for flood resilience in its 2025/26 Sustainability Report.

The Airport Authority Hong Kong (AAHK) has released its Sustainability Report for the fiscal year ending 31 March 2026, detailing the progress of the "Ascend" sustainability strategy. This framework is built upon 24 strategic goals categorized into four primary pillars: Environmental Excellence, Operational Excellence, Thriving Economies and Societies, and Thriving People.

A significant milestone in this reporting period is the adoption of the Nature-related Financial Disclosure Statement. By implementing the recommendations of the Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures (TNFD), HKIA has positioned itself as one of the first aviation hubs in Asia to formalize the financial risks and opportunities associated with nature-related dependencies.

Infrastructure and Operational Enhancements

The report highlights a major shift in passenger flow and capacity with the commissioning of new passenger departure facilities and the Coach Hall at the expanded Terminal 2 (T2). These upgrades are designed to alleviate congestion in Terminal 1 and streamline the transition for travelers arriving via land transport.

To support regional integration, AAHK launched the "Park & Fly" and "Park & Visit" services. These initiatives specifically target vehicles from Guangdong and Macao utilizing the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge (HZMB). "Park & Fly" provides an automated parking solution for those connecting to global flights, while "Park & Visit" facilitates tourism by allowing HZMB travelers to park and access various destinations across Hong Kong.

Digital Transformation and AI Integration

HKIA is aggressively deploying technology to reduce friction in the passenger journey. The airport has completed the first phase of a trilingual customer service avatar powered by Generative Artificial Intelligence, designed to handle complex passenger inquiries in real-time.

On the operational side, the Digital Apron and Tower Management System (Phase 2) is now substantially complete. This includes the installation of eight additional cameras across the Three-runway System (3RS), enhancing situational awareness and real-time monitoring for air traffic controllers and ground staff.

Traveler Logistics Guide

From a ground-level perspective, the best way to navigate the updated HKIA ecosystem is to leverage the new digital tools and T2 facilities.

Navigating Terminal 2 and Coach Hall For those arriving via the HZMB or airport buses, the new Coach Hall is the primary point of entry. Travelers should check their departure terminal on the digital signage immediately upon arrival, as T2 now handles a significant portion of departures.

Baggage Tracking and AI Support Avoid the traditional anxiety of the luggage carousel by using the new Arrival Baggage Tracking System. Real-time visualization dashboards in the Terminal 1 baggage halls now show the movement of bags from the aircraft stand to the belt. For immediate queries regarding flight changes or airport facilities, the Gen-AI trilingual avatar is available at key touchpoints to provide faster responses than traditional information desks.

Cross-Border Parking (HZMB) If driving from Macao or Guangdong, the "Park & Fly" service is the most efficient logistics choice. By utilizing the automated car park adjacent to the airport, travelers bypass the need for city-center transit, moving directly from the bridge to the terminal.

Regional Connectivity Impact

The expansion of Terminal 2 and the integration of the Three-runway System (3RS) signify Hong Kong's intent to reclaim its status as the premier aviation gateway to Asia. The focus on "double materiality"—assessing both the airport's impact on the environment and the environment's impact on the airport's financial viability—suggests a long-term strategy to withstand climate-related disruptions, as evidenced by the Platinum-winning flood resilience studies.

By streamlining the HZMB connection, HKIA is effectively expanding its catchment area into the Greater Bay Area, turning the airport into a multi-modal transit hub rather than just an aviation facility.

Efficiency now meets ecology as HKIA redefines the Asian transit experience.
