Copenhagen Airport (CPH), the primary international hub for Northern Europe, has shattered all previous records for the month of April. Real-time passenger data indicates that the airport handled nearly three million passengers in April 2026, marking the busiest April in its long history and a significant 6% year-on-year surge.

This unprecedented growth is being fueled by a combination of a late Easter holiday boost, a massive recovery in long-haul demand to Asia, and the continued dominance of Southern Europe as a primary leisure destination for Scandinavians.

Regional Growth: Spain and Asia Lead the Way

While CPH serves as a gateway to the world, two specific markets have emerged as the primary drivers of this April's record numbers.

1. The Spanish Surge

Spain remains the undisputed top destination for travelers departing from Copenhagen. Over 248,000 passengers flew to Spanish cities like Malaga, Barcelona, and Mallorca in April alone, representing an 8% increase compared to last year. The expansion of low-cost carriers and increased frequencies from SAS and Norwegian Air Shuttle have made Spain more accessible than ever for Danish and Swedish travelers.

2. The Asian Recovery

Long-haul travel to Asia has seen a remarkable 14% increase in traffic. This uptick is supported by several new and expanded flight routes:

  • Vietnam Airlines & China Eastern: Strengthening their direct connections to Southeast and East Asia.
  • SAS (Scandinavian Airlines): Ramping up frequencies to key hubs like Seoul and Shanghai.
  • The "Shanghai Boost": New direct flight connections to Shanghai have driven a 40% increase in international overnight stays by Asian visitors in Denmark.

A Diversified and International Passenger Base

The passenger composition at CPH underscores its status as a truly international hub. While local travelers make up a significant portion, the airport is increasingly serving as a transit point for travelers from across the globe.

Passenger Nationality % of Total Traffic
Danish 36%
Swedish 13%
British 11%
Norwegian 9%
US & Others 31%

The high volume of Swedish travelers is a direct result of CPH’s excellent rail connectivity to southern Sweden (Malmö/Lund), making it the preferred international hub for millions across the Øresund Bridge.

Impact on Denmark’s Tourism Sector

The surge in air travel at CPH is being mirrored by a significant upward trend in Denmark’s broader tourism industry. Statistics Denmark has reported an 8.1% increase in international overnight stays across the country.

The growth is particularly pronounced among non-European visitors. The combination of new direct flights and a weak Danish Krone (compared to the US Dollar and Swiss Franc) has made Copenhagen a highly attractive "value" destination for high-spending international tourists.
