Chaolung Siu-Ka-Pha, great Tai King and the First King of Assam.
Born in 1192 A.D. to Chao Chang-ngeu, son of Chao Chang-bun of Mung Khu Mung Ja (of Khunlung line) and Nang Mong –Blok-Kham-Sen. SIU is a totemic symbol of the clan meaning “tiger”. In keeping with the family custom, his maternal grandparents named him “SIU-KA-PHA” meaning “a tiger from heaven.
Contributions: He created United State of Assam. He was responsible for establishing close ties with Myanmar, Thailand, China, Yunan Province. He was the first Ahom king that ruled Assam. Chaolung Siu-Ka-Pha laid the foundation of a strong common race and a common language called Assamese. In fact, the name of this kingdom became Assam (Axom) from the generic name Ahom by which the local people used to call Siu-Ka-Pha and his accompanying Tais.
Siu-Ka-Pha was a peace loving king and did not shed blood in the Brahmaputra valley when he started expanding his hold over the territories. Another important quality of Chaopha Siu-Ka-Pha was not imposing his language and religion on the subjects. Under his regime Muga silk, stretched looms, artifacts, horses, utensils ,dresses, types of houses etc developed. He encouraged locals to go for wet paddy cultivation in place of slash and burn method are the material contributions of In his memory and to glorify his contribution, the Chaolung Siu-Ka-Pha Samanway Kshetra has been constructed. So great was the contribution of Swargadeo (Heavenly King) Siu-Ka-Pha that 2nd December every year (the day on which this Great King entered Assam) is observed as “Siu-Ka-Pha Divas” by the People of Assam, also declared as “Assam Divas”
